Depending on the folklore tradition, the heron can also carry associations with grief, death, and the boundary between worlds. Unlike ravens or crows, the symbolism isn't universal, but in Celtic, Japanese and some European folklore, herons are often seen as liminal creatures because they inhabit the meeting point of land, water and sky. This gives them a role as guides between the physical and spiritual worlds.
